Liberty Specialty Markets has hired Massimiliano Fantini to lead an Italian reinsurance operation based out of Rome and Milan.

Fantini joins from Guy Carpenter where he has been the Italian country manager for the past five years.

Before that, he spent 15 years at Swiss Re in Italy and was head of non-life client market when he left after serving as the reinsurance giant’s chief financial officer in the country, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Liberty’s Italian reinsurance team will write property, casualty and specialty business with Fantini becoming general manager reinsurance for Italy.

As well as launching the Italian reinsurance arm, Liberty Specialty Markets has rebranded its reinsurance division as Liberty Mutual Re.

The carrier said the rebrand encompasses all aspects of its reinsurance division, which incorporates 180 people in 14 locations.

The carrier has also started to write marine business for the first time through its US reinsurance platform.

Scott Johnson has joined Liberty Mutual Re from Munich Re to launch the US account.

In his new role Johnson will report to James D’Onofrio, Liberty Mutual Re’s general manager for the US.

“The launch of our Italian business is a key step in our plans to grow Liberty Mutual Re’s business,” Dieter Winkel, president of Liberty Mutual Re said.

“We’re extending our global footprint while building on the close relationships we’ve already developed with clients and brokers in Italy,” Winkel added.

Commenting on the rebranding, Winkel said: “By rebranding as Liberty Mutual Re, the sole treaty reinsurance business within Liberty Mutual Group, we can be very clear about the benefits that our financial strength offers while highlighting the breadth and depth of our offering.”
