Markel has hired Beazley’s underwriting manager Gordon Lam in Singapore.

He will take up his new post as a senior professional and financial risks underwriter early next year.

The exec will work closely with Markel’s head of professional and financial risks Simon Moi to manage and underwrite financial lines and casualty business in the Asian region, his new employer said in a statement.

Lam is expected to relocate to Markel’s Hong Kong office in “due course” the carrier said.

Lam has more than three decades of experience in the market. At Beazley, he was an underwriting manager. Before that he was a special projects manager at Citystate Asia Pacific Insurance, where he was also a senior manager looking after development.

“Gordon’s prior experience in managing a broad range of product lines including management liability and professional indemnity will benefit Markel significantly and he brings with him well-established contacts – valuable as we develop our book of business across the region,” said Moi.

Markel’s managing director for Asia Matt Cannock said: “Gordon’s appointment is significant for our PFR team as we grow our underwriting capabilities in Asia.”

“He will be a great asset to our team, and I have no doubt our clients will stand to gain the most from this move,” the executive went on.

“His appointment underlines our commitment to the region here and will play a big role in expanding our business footprint across Asia.”
