Munich Re Specialty Group has appointed Ben Tucker and Steven Weiss to lead it’s Americas underwriting team.

Ben Tucker joins as senior vice president and chief underwriting officer of specialty insurance.

Tucker’s move to the German reinsurance giant’s US platform was first revealed by this publication earlier this month.

He was most recently at XL Catlin, where he has headed the US terrorism and political violence division since 2013.

In his new role at Munich Re he will focus on developing specialty lines in the US with a focus on cyber, terrorism, political violence and financial lines.

As well as Tucker, Steven Weiss joins the carrier as senior vice president and chief underwriting officer of ocean and inland marine insurance.

Prior to joining Munich Re’s new underwriting unit in the US, Weiss was senior vice president of marine at Aspen.

He spent 11 years in various marine roles at Liberty before that, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The appointments come hot on the heels of industry veteran John Hennessy’s appointment as CEO and president of Roanoke Group, the US platform of Munich Re’s Lloyd’s syndicate.

Roanoke - which Munich Re acquired ten years ago - has a well-established marine and cargo business led by Karen Groff. It writes on behalf of Munich Re’s Lloyd’s platform, formerly known as the Watkins Syndicate.

“Building a new team and platform under the Munich Re brand brings compelling new insurance products and capabilities to the marketplace,” Weiss said.

“I am particularly energised and ready to apply my experience, entrepreneurial spirit and service-oriented mind- set toward the success of this unique growth initiative,” Tucker added.

Hennessy said: “I am excited to be working closely with Ben and Steven as we bring our combined experiences together and build-out our specialty capabilities in support of our brokers and customers.”
