Ambitious Lloyd’s broker AFL has launched a commercial marine division, appointing the former head of Ed’s marine division to lead the business unit.

Alex Mott joins AFL as director of marine from Ed, where he headed up the London market rival practice’s marine unit since January 2016.

Mott has held a number of senior positions in the London market at broking houses including Edge Brokers, London Special Risks and a former stint at Cooper Gay before it rebranded to Ed.

AFL Executive Chairman Toby Esser, the former CEO of what was Cooper Gay, said the launch of a commercial marine division is a “logical step” for AFL as the broker looks to grow the business into a full-service intermediary.

“We are responding to increased demand from clients for a modern, proactive approach to processing and placing marine business, and are delighted that a skilled insurance professional of Alex’s calibre is coming on board,” Esser said.

AFL CEO Bob Finch added that technology would be central to growing the new marine unit:

“We are committed to developing and adopting the latest technology and modernisation initiatives to deliver efficiencies in processing and placing marine business and maintain London’s position as a global leader in marine insurance.”

AFL has been steadily building out its wholesale and retail capabilities, with the property team bolstered last month with two hires.

Esser - through his company Next Generation Holdings Ltd - acquired a controlling stake in AFL last year.
